Three Things I know, I know: Monday November 7th
1. The Guardians need to add 1B that can hit LHP and or a SP
I'm not breaking any news here. The Guardians had an incredibly exciting season and seem to be way ahead of schedule as far as the window of a World Series opportunity is concerned, but they need to make moves this off-season.
I, as well as many Guardians fans think the three biggest positions of need are a first baseman that can hit left handed pitching, a depth starting pitcher, and a catcher. Personally, I am in the camp that believes in Austin Hedges as a glue guy. Leadership with a young club is important, and he brings that. No matter what happens with the catcher position, I think it is clear that Bo Naylor will get some time with the Guardians to see what we have in him. Will he split time with Hedges, or will they bring in a new catcher for him to share the spot with...we'll have to wait and see.
Besides the catcher position first base is the next biggest question mark. Josh Naylor has been serviceable defensively, but he really struggles against left handed pitching. It seems like there will be a ton of moves we could make either in free agency or via a trade, where we can bring in someone to take over first base full time or split the responsibility and DH along with Naylor. The guys I'd like to see us make a run at, via free agency include: Anthony Rizzo, Jose Abreu, Josh Bell, Wil Myers, Carlos Santana and Trey Mancini. If they were to make a trade I would love to see them go after Christian Walker. Regardless of what they do I would like to see them lock down a guy for 2-3 years until Johnkensy Noel is ready to go.
Last thing to touch on is starting pitching depth. All our losses in the postseason came when Cal Quantril, or Aaron Civale started games. I am not trying to take anything away from them and I think Cal is a solid fourth or fifth starter on this ball club...but we need another guy who can give us a lock down start similar to Bieber and McKenzie. In order to find a starting pitcher, we need to look no further than the Miami Marlins. Particularly, the guy I like the most, is Edward Cabrera. Cabrera is still a little young but I think he has the potential to be a lock down guy, similar to the top two in our rotation. In order to land him we would need to offer a pretty big trade, but we have the pieces to go out and make a big trade.
Regardless of what happens, what I know, I know is we need to do something. I have never defended the Dolan's but I have always defended the Cleveland baseball organization because the organization typically makes smart moves. Having said that...this is the time to spend...this is the time to make a run at this. The division is still a little down, and we will have a target on our back all next year, we need to beef up the team, and invest in an opportunity to be competitive. I am not suggesting doing anything crazy, just a little roster enhancement here or there and we will be in an excellent position.
2. Eggnog season is officially here
The weather in Northeast Ohio doesn't feel like winter is around the corner, but if you go in any store this time of year it feels as if the holiday season is coming quickly. One of my favorite holiday season trends is seeing eggnog back on the shelves. I don't know if there is a more polarizing drink. The people who love eggnog (me) love it, but the people who hate it are repulsed by it. But regardless of your feelings it's back on the shelves for the next two months or so.
Temperatures need to dip down into the 30's or 40's for the eggnog to really hit and like I said we haven't been close to that lately, but the clocks have officially changed and pitch black 5:00pm is when eggnog starts tasting a little sweeter.
3. Super Pets is an elite movie
In the past ten years animated movies have had a total glow up and Pixar has been at the forefront of that push...but this is one of those "a rising tide, raises all ships" moments where all studios are catching up and releasing excellent animated content.
Super Pets was on my radar, and I even considered going to see it in theaters but in the world of never ending content things tend to slip through the cracks, and this was one of those times. I finally got around to watching the movie this weekend and boy, was I impressed. It has a good story, action, and even some heartwarming moments. I think they nailed it with the voice actors and just all around two thumbs up movie that I highly recommend checking out. It is currently streaming on HBO Max.
Another great movie along these same lines is Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. This weekend I had a chance to check this one out for the first time as well, and it was equally impressive. I do think I give Super Pets a slight advantage for the re-watch value, but Chip 'n Dale should be a "must watch" as well.
