Soup Szn: Week One and we almost lost a finger
The road to a Super Bowl is never easy. Teams get banged up, adversity seeps in, and outcomes can be unpredictable. It took me approximately one week to learn, the same can be said for the road to the Soup-er Bowl.
Sunday started out like most Week One Sundays. Tensions were high. There was a nervous energy that hung in the air, both exciting and inescapable. It felt like the weather knew it was football season, and while it was 90+ degrees for a majority of the week, the weekend cooled down by about 20 degrees. Leaving us with a mid-70's, cloudy, Sunday afternoon...perfect for soup season kickoff.
Admittedly....I had very little to do with the making of the soup. My wife is the one who found the recipe, and bought all the groceries. She will likely be cooking most of these soups throughout the season. Having said that, I'm not sitting around twirling my thumbs. Someone needed to deep clean the kitchen, and make sure the crockpot got their warm-up reps in. I am also assuming I will be on clean-up duty throughout the season...and my wife uses no less than 325 dishes when cooking...so it's fair to say we pull equal weight, however, the injury risk in my responsibilities pales in comparison to actual cooking and that's where our story starts.
About an hour and a half before the 1:00pm kick off, I heard a scream in the kitchen. The kind of scream you would expect to hear from a Yinzer halfway through the second quarter as they watch their beloved "Stillers" go down 20-0.
I was worried I would walk in and my wife's finger would be hanging on to a one point lead. (Ala Saints over the Titans 16-15)
Last I had seen she was chopping an onion, with more precision than Tua chopping up the Chargers defense en route to a 36-34 victory. But I knew the knife had to be the culprit of the scream.
By the time I made it to the kitchen she was running her finger under water, and I could tell we were in a crisis averted situation. Understandably, she was scared by the fact a knife had gone into her finger, but we were able to damage control the situation much like the Commanders were able to ward off an upset against the Arizona Cardinals.
After a quick phone call to dad, my wife was able to get her finger bandaged, and the soup in the crockpot. Again, it's football season, and much like the Ravens learned in their 25-9 victory over the Texans, even with losing JK Dobbins to a season ending injury, you have to persevere.
Once the soup was done cooking we, yet again, found ourselves in full on crisis mode. The stress of cooking, paired with the Sunday scaries created an all-too-familiar panic, the likes of which could be compared to the Bears falling to the Packers 38-20.
There were tears, and hugs, but in the end everything turned out about as good as a 24-3 victory for the Browns over the Bengals.
The soup was fantastic! I know it was only the first week but I already feel like this is going to be a tough one to beat. Classic Chicken Noodle is the perfect measuring stick for the rest of the soups this season, and it certainly came to play in the opening Sunday.
Can't wait to keep this rolling.
