Four Cavs Takeaways 20 Games Into the Season

Donovan Mitchell led the Cavs last night in a big win against the Boston Celtics. I don’t know about the rest of you, but this season has been the most exciting basketball season of my life.

Before you lose your mind…the 2014-2018 run was incredible, but man there was so much pressure. This season it feels like the Cavs have no pressure, and yet they have the best record in the league.

Here are a few of my favorite things about this season:

Isaac Okoro.

Man, I love this guy, about a month ago Okoro had a box out in the Bucks game that brought youth coaches across the country to tears of joy. This guy does all the little things right. He is an excellent defender, he’s a hustle player, and he is drilling shots. He had a pass to Jarrett Allen late in the game last night that made me jump out of my chair. This guy is electric, and he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. If Okoro has 1000 fans I’m one of them. If he has 1 fan it’s me. If he has no fans, I’m dead.

DeMarre Carroll

I can’t be the only person who had no clue DeMarre Carroll was on this coaching staff right? Gun to my head I would have thought he was coming off the bench for the Utah Jazz. But in all seriousness, it sounds like this guy has been an excellent addition to the coaching staff. Obviously, Kenny Atkinson is in the running for COTY and he has been very important to the team’s success, but I love shouting out a guy who doesn’t get enough credit. Especially when that guy has fantastic hair.

The Frog

The legend of the Cavs Frog will go down with the Rally Possum and Jobu. I’m sure internet sleuths have already uncovered the origin story of this dancing amphibian, but I am choosing ignorance because it is more fun having no clue where this guy came from, what his relevance is, or where he goes next. I like to think he crawls straight out of the Cuyahoga, hops his way to Rocket Mortgage, and brings nothing but good vibes.  I don’t think it is too far to say The Frog is the most important piece of this team. You tell me, had any Cavs team boasted a 15-0 record before The Frog showed up? That’s what I thought.

Georges Niang and Tristan Thompson’s Post Game Interviews

These guys are the Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye of the 2024/2025 team. It is great having Tristan on the squad. As the only remaining member of the 2016 team, it is nice to have that culture, and Niang is fitting in as a leader as well. Tristan doesn’t bring as much to the court these days, but he is a vital part of the team. He’s always one of the first off, the bench handing out high fives. Championship teams need these types of players as well, and getting a chance to see their personality, and the personality they bring out of Austin Carr has been great as well.
